How It Works
Get your API key
API access is part of an approved trade account. Talk to us and we'll switch it on; you then subscribe, add a balance and create your keys in your trade dashboard.
Send a VIN or reg
One authenticated request per vehicle, with your key in the x-api-key header.
Get structured records back
Each dealer service comes back with its date, mileage, the dealer that did the work and what was carried out, plus a link to the full ServiceStamp report.

A value we do not have comes back as null, never missing: a VIN-only lookup may have no registration mark, and some manufacturers send no mileage unit or item category.
Response Codes
You're only charged when records come back.

| 202 | The manufacturer system is still processing. Retry after the Retry-After header. Not charged until records come back. |
| 204 | No manufacturer service records for this vehicle. Not charged. |
| 400 | Invalid VIN or registration, or both sent at once. |
| 401 | Missing, invalid or revoked API key. |
| 402 | Your API balance is empty. Top up in your trade dashboard. |
| 403 | API access is switched off, the trade account is not active, or the API plan is not active. |
| 404 | No vehicle could be found for that registration. Not charged. |
| 429 | Too many requests. Slow down and retry after the Retry-After header. |
| 503 | The lookup could not be completed on our side. Retry later. Not charged. |
Pricing: A Monthly Plan, Then Pay Per Lookup
The API is £49.99 a month per trade account, cancelled whenever you like. Lookups come out of a prepaid balance at £2.49 each, and only when records come back. Top up by card from £25.00 in your dashboard.

No Records, No Charge
A lookup that finds no manufacturer service records costs nothing, exactly as it works for trade checks in the dashboard.
Retries Are Free
A "still processing" response is never charged. Call again when it's ready and you pay once.
What's Covered
The API returns manufacturer dealer service records for 39 brands, for cars from 2012 onwards. How much detail each record carries depends on the manufacturer.
Records come from manufacturer systems, so they show servicing carried out by franchised dealers. Work done by independent garages isn't held in those systems. The Service History Check page has the full coverage detail by brand.

Who can use the Service History API?
API access is available to approved ServiceStamp trade accounts. Talk to us about what you're building and we'll switch it on. You then subscribe to the API plan, add a balance and create and manage your own live and test keys from your trade dashboard.
Can I look up by registration as well as VIN?
Yes. Send either a UK registration or a 17-character VIN.
How quickly do results come back?
Lookups usually complete in a single call. If a manufacturer system needs longer, you get a 202 response with a Retry-After header. Call again after that, and you're only charged once.
What does the API cost?
£49.99 a month per trade account, plus £2.49 for each lookup that returns records, taken from a prepaid balance you top up by card in your trade dashboard (£25.00 to £5000.00 a time). A lookup that finds no manufacturer service records costs nothing, and the same vehicle within 24 hours is free. You can cancel the plan at any time; it runs to the end of the month you have paid for.
What happens if my balance runs out?
Live lookups answer 402 until you top up. We email you when the balance drops below £25.00 and again if a lookup is refused. Test keys keep working.
What if I look up the same vehicle twice?
A second lookup of the same vehicle from your account within 24 hours returns the report you already have and uses no credit. That is also why a retry after a 202 is never charged twice.
Is there a sandbox?
Yes. Ask for a test key (it starts ss_test_). It returns a sample report for any valid VIN or registration, never charges your balance and never contacts the manufacturer systems. The registration TEST204 returns the no-records response and TEST202 the still-processing response, so you can build for every path before going live.
Is there a rate limit?
Yes, 60 requests a minute per account by default, shared across your keys. Every response carries X-RateLimit-Limit and X-RateLimit-Remaining headers. If you need more, tell us.
Does the API include finance, write-off or stolen checks?
No. The API covers Service History Checks. Vehicle History Checks and the Full Check stay available in your trade dashboard.
Do API lookups show in my trade dashboard?
Yes. Every lookup appears in your trade dashboard alongside the checks you run there, so your whole team can see them.
Can I share the results with buyers?
Yes. Every response includes a report_url for the full ServiceStamp report, which you can share with a buyer or download as a PDF.
