What the free SORN status check shows

SORN, short for Statutory Off-Road Notification, is the formal declaration to DVLA that a vehicle is not being used on public roads. The status sits on the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry database and is free to look up by registration. The free ServiceStamp check returns the current SORN status, the tax position, and the wider identity picture for the same vehicle.

For owners, the SORN check is the simplest way to confirm whether your own vehicle (or one you have just bought) is correctly declared, and whether a tax refund is due. Mistakes happen, especially when buying a car the previous owner had SORN, or when re-taxing after a long break from the road.

For buyers, the SORN check is the first thing to verify when looking at a car that has spent any time off the road. A SORN vehicle cannot be test-driven on a public road, cannot be driven home without first being taxed and insured, and may have been off the road for a reason the seller is not volunteering. For the full DVLA picture across tax, MOT, mileage and identity in one view, run our free car check.

What SORN actually means, and when to use it

SORN is a legal declaration that a vehicle is not being used on public roads. Once declared, the vehicle must be kept on private land such as a driveway, in a garage or on other private property. It cannot be driven on a public road for any reason, including a trip to the shops, except to a pre-booked MOT test.

The most common reasons to declare SORN are: storing a car you are not currently using, restoring a project vehicle over an extended period, exporting a car abroad, or simply taking a break from ownership without losing the vehicle and the registration. SORN remains in force indefinitely and only ends when you tax the vehicle again or notify DVLA that ownership has transferred.

Crucially, SORN does not remove the need for safe storage. The vehicle must still be in a fit state, ideally with a valid MOT for insurance purposes, and you remain responsible for it. Selling a SORN car requires the buyer to tax and insure it before they can drive it away.

How to declare or cancel a SORN

Declaring SORN is free and takes a few minutes online via gov.uk. You need the V5C logbook reference (the 11-digit number on the front of the V5C) or the V11 tax reminder. For brand-new keepers without a V5C in their name yet, the new-keeper supplement (V5C/2) reference works too. Once submitted, the SORN takes effect immediately, and any unused tax is refunded automatically to the registered keeper's bank or by cheque.

You can also declare SORN by phone (0300 123 4321) or by post using a V890 form, but online is significantly faster. The system confirms the declaration immediately and updates the public DVLA record within minutes, which is why a free SORN status check returns up-to-the-minute data.

To cancel a SORN, you simply tax the vehicle again. The act of taxing automatically ends the SORN status. The vehicle must also have valid insurance from the moment you intend to drive it on the road. Many keepers tax their car the day before they plan to use it, then drive away with insurance in place from that morning.

SORN and insurance: what you need to know

SORN exempts a vehicle from continuous insurance enforcement (CIE), the rule that requires every UK vehicle on the public road to be covered. While SORN is in force, you do not have to insure the vehicle, which is one of the biggest practical reasons to use the declaration for stored or restoration cars.

That said, most owners of stored or valuable vehicles choose to keep at least third-party laid-up or fire-and-theft cover in place. The vehicle can still be stolen, vandalised or damaged by fire or flooding while off the road, and a SORN does nothing to protect against any of that. Specialist storage and laid-up policies are cheap precisely because road risk is excluded.

Important: if you intend to drive the vehicle even briefly, including to an MOT test or a garage, you must insure it from the moment you take it on the road. Driving a SORN vehicle without insurance compounds the offences and can result in seizure, a court fine and a driving record endorsement.

Driving a SORN vehicle: the penalties

Driving a vehicle that is currently SORN on a public road is enforced through ANPR cameras and is detected, not assumed. The penalties are designed to be severe enough to deter casual use, and they stack:

  • Fixed penalty of £80 from DVLA for driving without tax (SORN means the vehicle is, by definition, untaxed).
  • Court fine of up to £1,000 or five times the annual tax, whichever is higher, on escalation.
  • Six points and a fine of up to £5,000 for driving without insurance (CIE only applies on the road).
  • Vehicle clamping, removal and storage charges, with release requiring full settlement.
  • Possible vehicle seizure under section 165A of the Road Traffic Act 1988 if no insurance is in place.

The only permitted exception is a pre-booked MOT test journey. Even then, the vehicle must be insured for that journey. Document the MOT booking and keep proof of insurance to hand in case you are stopped.

Tax refunds, SORN and what to expect after declaration

When you declare SORN partway through a tax period, DVLA refunds any complete unused months of tax automatically. The refund is paid to the registered keeper, either to the bank account on file (for Direct Debit payers) or by cheque sent to the keeper's registered address. There is no need to apply separately.

Refunds typically arrive within 4 to 6 weeks. If you have not received a refund 8 weeks after declaring SORN, contact DVLA directly. Common reasons for delay include a keeper address change that was not updated on the V5C, or a bank-account change for Direct Debit refunds.

When you eventually re-tax the vehicle, you can choose the same payment options as before: annual lump sum, six-monthly, or monthly Direct Debit. The same surcharge applies to non-annual options. For the full tax picture including 2026/27 VED rates, our car tax calculator and the detailed 2026/27 car tax bands guide cover the cost side in detail.

Pair the report with a physical inspection

A digital tax and SORN check is essential, but it isn't a substitute for looking at the car. Worn tyres, corrosion, poor crash repairs and electrical faults all show up only in person, and a structured walk-around catches things even an honest seller may not have noticed. Our used-car buying checklist takes you through bodywork, tyres, suspension, brakes, fluid levels, electrical functions and the test drive itself.

SORN vehicles in particular should be inspected for storage damage, perished rubber components, seized calipers and tyres that may have developed flat spots. Together, the records and the inspection give you the two perspectives you need to buy with confidence.

SORN status FAQ

How do I check if my car is SORN?+
Enter your UK registration on the form above. ServiceStamp returns the live SORN status, tax status and tax expiry date straight from DVLA in seconds. No signup required.
What does SORN actually mean?+
SORN stands for Statutory Off-Road Notification. It is a formal declaration to DVLA that a vehicle is not being used on public roads and is therefore exempt from tax and from continuous insurance enforcement.
How do I declare a SORN?+
Online via gov.uk using your V5C logbook reference (or V11 tax reminder, or new keeper supplement). The declaration takes effect immediately and any unused tax is refunded automatically. You can also declare by phone (0300 123 4321) or by post using a V890 form.
Will I get a tax refund when I declare SORN?+
Yes. DVLA refunds any complete unused months of tax automatically to the registered keeper. Refunds typically arrive within 4 to 6 weeks via bank transfer (for Direct Debit payers) or cheque.
Do I need insurance on a SORN vehicle?+
SORN exempts the vehicle from continuous insurance enforcement, so legally you do not need road-going insurance. Many keepers still take out laid-up or fire-and-theft cover to protect against theft, vandalism and damage in storage.
Can I drive my SORN car to an MOT test?+
Yes, but it must be insured for the journey, and the test must be pre-booked. Document the booking and keep proof of insurance. This is the only legal exception to the 'no public road' rule for a SORN vehicle.
What happens if I drive a SORN car illegally?+
ANPR cameras detect SORN vehicles on the road automatically. Penalties stack: £80 DVLA fine for untaxed driving, up to £1,000 court fine on escalation, six points and up to £5,000 for driving without insurance, plus possible vehicle seizure under section 165A of the RTA 1988.
Can I tow a SORN car on the road?+
Yes, by trailer or recovery truck. The car itself is not being driven and is not on its own wheels using the public road. Make sure the towing vehicle and recovery equipment are properly insured and rated for the load.
Does SORN affect insurance no-claims discount?+
No. Your no-claims bonus continues to accrue if your insurance is renewed or kept in laid-up form. If you cancel insurance entirely, ask your insurer whether they pause or end your no-claims clock.
How do I cancel a SORN?+
Simply tax the vehicle again. The act of taxing automatically cancels the SORN. The vehicle must also have valid insurance from the moment you drive it on the road.
Can I sell a SORN car?+
Yes. The new keeper must tax and insure the vehicle before they drive it away. You should notify DVLA of the transfer using the V5C as normal. The SORN declaration ends when the new keeper takes ownership.
Where does the SORN data come from?+
Live from the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry service, the same source used by gov.uk's official tax-check tool. Records reflect data held at the time of the lookup.
Does ServiceStamp store my registration number?+
No. Registration numbers are used only to retrieve the vehicle information you have asked for. The lookup is fully GDPR-compliant.
