Service History Check Success Rates: What We've Learned From Thousands of Vehicles
Since launching ServiceStamp, we've run thousands of service history checks against manufacturer databases across the UK. We've compiled the data to answer the question every buyer and seller asks: will my vehicle have service records?
The headline: 7 in 10 vehicles have manufacturer service records
Across all checks we've processed, approximately 70% of vehicles returned at least one manufacturer service record. That means for the majority of 2012+ vehicles that have been serviced at a franchised dealership, digital records exist — even if the paper service book is lost or incomplete.
The remaining 30% returned no manufacturer service records. That doesn't mean the vehicle was never serviced — it usually means the servicing was done outside the manufacturer dealer network.
What affects whether records are found
Model year matters most
Manufacturer digital service record systems were rolled out from around 2012 onwards, though the exact start date varies by brand. Vehicles from 2014+ have significantly higher success rates than those from 2012-2013, as more dealers had adopted digital record-keeping by then.
If your vehicle is pre-2012, manufacturer digital records are unlikely to exist regardless of where it was serviced.
Franchised dealer servicing vs independent garages
This is the single biggest factor. Manufacturer service history databases only contain records from franchised dealerships — not independent garages, fast-fit chains, or DIY servicing.
A vehicle serviced entirely at independent garages from new will show zero manufacturer records, even if it has a full service history documented in the paper book.
Brand coverage varies
Some manufacturers adopted digital record-keeping earlier and more comprehensively than others. Premium brands like BMW, Audi, and Mercedes tend to have excellent digital records going back to 2012. Other brands may have patchier coverage for earlier model years.
ServiceStamp currently covers 39 manufacturer brands, and we're continuously expanding coverage.
What does "no records found" actually mean?
If a check returns no manufacturer service records, it typically means one or more of the following:
- The vehicle was serviced at independent garages — the most common reason. Independent garages don't report to manufacturer databases.
- The vehicle is pre-2012 — before most manufacturers adopted digital record systems.
- The vehicle has genuinely never been serviced — rare, but possible, particularly for low-mileage vehicles.
- Records exist but haven't been uploaded — occasionally a dealer visit is recorded but not synced to the central system. This is uncommon with modern systems.
A "no records" result doesn't mean the vehicle has no service history at all. It means we couldn't find records in the manufacturer's digital system. The vehicle may still have a documented history via paper service books, MOT records, or independent garage invoices.
Every report still includes MOT history
Even when no manufacturer service records are found, every ServiceStamp report includes the full MOT test history from the DVSA, which shows test dates, mileage readings, pass/fail results, and advisory notices. This gives you an independent mileage trail and condition snapshot for the vehicle's life.
How this helps buyers and sellers
For buyers
Knowing that 7 in 10 vehicles have digital records means a service history check is worth doing before you buy. If records are found, you get verified proof of servicing that can't be faked or forged — unlike paper service books.
If no records are found, the MOT history still gives you a mileage timeline to cross-reference against the seller's claims.
For sellers
If your vehicle has been dealer-serviced, recovering the digital service history is one of the fastest ways to add value before selling. Missing service history can reduce a car's value by 10-23%, so proving it exists with an official report can pay for itself many times over.
Check your vehicle
Run a service history check using your registration number or VIN. Results are delivered instantly, and every report includes MOT history and vehicle details alongside any manufacturer service records found.
